Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

Click for Description

Vocal performance by Thom Larson of this Christmas favorite.

This song was written in 1943 by Hugh Martin and Ralph Blane, for Judy Garland to sing in the 1944 movie, “Meet Me In St. Louis”.

It was later redone by Frank Sinatra (that’s probably the version you’re more familiar with).

I chose the Judy Garland version to sing. I feel the lyrics in this version are very much in keeping with what’s going on in our lives here in December of 2020, with the pandemic in full swing.

You’ll probably notice that I redid the vocal melody a bit in a few places, to emphasize, and to give a more sorrowful feel to a few lines.

I love how this song weaves in and out between happy and sad…

Telephone Line

Thom Larson singing this 1977 Electric Light Orchestra song.

You'll notice in the first verse that the vocal sounds very strange and muted. That's intentional - it's supposed to sound like an old 70's telephone.

The Town I Loved So Well

Thom Larson singing “The Town I Loved So Well” (by Phil Coulter).

Phil Coulter wrote the song about growing up in Derry, Northern Ireland. The first three verses reflect a nice, simple childhood that one would dream about living in Ireland. But starting in the fourth verse, it moves on to “The Troubles”.

If you’re not familiar with “The Troubles” in Northern Ireland (1968 – 1998), a quick Google search will give you tons of info. I chose some of the images for this video just because they went well with the music; others are historical images of that period. Pics from the shirt factory, the gasyard wall, and of “The Troubles” are actual pics from that time period.

Note that if you want to read the lyrics while the song is playing, turn on “Closed Captions” (the little rectangle with CC in it).

Bed Of Roses

Thom Larson sings this challenging Bon Jovi classic Power Ballad.

The words of this song certainly show that John Bon Jovi was going through some turmoil when he wrote it. He says that he was actually was nursing a hangover.

But the song also shows the love for his partner, Dorothea Hurley (together since high school). The fourth verse centers around his “mistress”. In this song, his “mistress” is music (not a girl, even though that’s what’s depicted in my video).

The song goes on to say that he won’t be alone, but that doesn’t mean he’s not lonely. This line refers to him being surrounded by people at his shows.

Solidarity Forever

In 2017, Amalgamated Transit Union’s Local 752 celebrated 100 years of service to the community of Bloomington/Normal, IL (Local 752 was chartered in 1917).

This video was put together to help commemorate that milestone. The images are of ATU Local 752 throughout the years. The song is “Solidarity Forever”, written by labor activist Ralph Chaplin (sung by Local 752 member Thom Larson).

It happens that this song was written just a few years before Local 752 was chartered (1915).
