Completed Cross Stitch Projects by Thom Larson

Completed Projects

(I've tried to keep these in the order in which I completed them.)

Maritime Sampler

Designed by Michael LeClair for Simplicity (Kit 05598)

This was my first attempt at cross stitch, back in 1995.

Stitched on#14 White Aida, over one thread.

Finished design size - approx. 12" x 9".

Southern Mansion

Designed by Ginger and Spice. Sorry, I can't find the book that this piece was in now.

This is a great example of "Blackwork". Blackwork is all done in one color of floss (cross stitch thread) - but not necessarily black. Shading is achieved by using different numbers of threads, different stitches, etc.
Finished design size - approx. 9" x 13"

Castle Sampler

Designed by Teresa Wentzler

I enlarged this one quite a bit from what was called for in the chart.

Size called for was 16.5" x 15.25".
My finished design size is approx. 22" x 21"

Angel of the Morning

Designed by Marilyn Leavitt-Imblum for Lavender & Lace.

I would estimate this piece to have 15,000 to 18,000 stitches. Each stitch is 1/16", except the face and neck; those stitches are 1/32" - yes, 32 stitches per inch, meaning that one square inch of her face is comprised of over 1,000 stitches...

Stitched on 32-count Blue Spruce linen, over two threads.

Finished design size - approx. 18" x 12"

The Girl Sat on a Dragon Reading a Book

14 count Aida fabric
Finished design size approx. 18" x 12"

Hearth and Home

This is a Russian design by Panna called "Hearth and Home". Stitched on 14-count Aida, stitching over one thread. The finished piece is approximately 12" x 12".

This style of cross stitch is known as "Blackwork"; it's done all in one color of floss (thread). Different shades of color are achieved by using more or less floss, and using different stitches.

Alice Mouse

I completed this cute little piece around May 1st, 2026. My daughter saw it, and said that it has to hang in her room, and that she already has a perfect spot picked out for it.

The finished design is approx. 3.75" x 4.5". Its' done on 28 count Evenweave fabric.

Historic Lighthouses

Designed by Michael LeClair for Needle Treasures

I really need to take this one apart and clean it - you can see some fairly serious staining on the lower half.

Stitched on #14 Ivory Aida, over one thread.

Finished design size - approx. 13" x 12".

Fantasy Triptych

By Teresa Wentzler

As you can see in the inset above (on the upper-right of the image), this was originally part of a much larger piece.

Unfortunately, I misplaced the chart, floss, etc. for this one during one of my moves. I should repurchase the supplies and finish it one of these days.

Stitched on 25ct Antique White Lugana, over two threads.

Finished design size should be 12.5" x 18.5"

Fairy Grandmother

Designed by Marily Leavitt-Imblum for Lavender & Lace.

Stitched on 32ct. Clay Linen.

Finished design size - approx. 19" x 9"

Crescent Moon Dragon

28 count hand-dyed Jobelan fabric (stitched over two threads).
Finished design size approx. 15.75" x 12"

Oriental Orchids

Done on 14-count beige Aida. Stitched over one thread. Finished size is approximately 12" x 12".

Mount Fuji

Based on a Japanese hand painted postcard from the early 1900s.

This one is done on 16 count Aida fabric, stitching over one thread. The finished size is approximately 11” x 7”.

Rose Tree In Bloom - Pillow

Designed by Teresa Wentzler

Stitch Master Cathy Grafton was kind enough to sew the pillow for me, once I completed the cross stitch.

Stitched on 10 count Tula in "Bone" from Zweigart.

Finished size approx. 14" x 14".

Girl and Geese

This one's kind of different. It's hard to tell in the pic - it's actually two cross stitches together, one over the other, giving it a three dimensional quality.

The girl and the geese are in the foreground, stitched on a transparent material (meaning that if any threads crossed over the unstitched area on the back, it would have shown through on the front).

The cottage is setback in the frame, stitched on regular aida material.

Finished design size - approx. 5" x 6"

Last Supper

Designed by Janlynn.

This one was quite challenging. Due to its size, I actually had to build a wooden stand to hold it while I stitched.

Finished size: approx. 10" x 26"

Christmas Love Sampler

This is one of my favorites. I love the bright colors of the sampler, and I love the bright red frame that I found for it.

On 28 count Evenweave Linen, "stitched over two threads". This means there are 14 stitches per inch, or 196 stitches in a 1” x 1” area…

European Bistro

Done on 16-count beige Aida. Stitched over one thread.

The finished size is approx. 16" x 11" – that’s over 45,000 stitches!

Lighthouse

14ct Aida over one  thread. Approx. 13" x 17.5"

I stitched this one  in 2007, but never quite  completed it (I've lost the components for  it over the years). Maybe I'll finish it one day, but for now, it looks good.
